Instrument disinfection getting harder
Last week we took you on a tour of the central sterile department at a large medical center to find out how surgical instruments are cleaned and disinfected. These departments -- also called central service -- often don't get a lot attention, but they're vitally important to the workings of any hospital. The field recently received some unflattering attention when word got out that two hospitals in North Carolina had been using -- by mistake -- hydraulic fluid to clean instruments. People in the industry say that was a freak accident, but they also say central sterile departments are facing wide-spread challenges. The Health Show's Greg Dahlmann has more.

Chart topping antioxidant foods
Recently, the USDA released a list of the top 20 antioxidant rich foods. You've probably figured out that antioxidants seem to be fairly important to a healthy body. How important? That sounds like a question for our diet and lifestyle consultant, Dr. Stephanie Beling.

A more rousing fire alarm
On last week's program, we reported on The Great Sleep Experiment, which sought to find answers about how sleeping helps children learn. Today, we're going to try to find the best way to wake them up. According to the US Fire Administration, 80 percent of all fire deaths occur in homes. Installing working smoke alarms increases your chances of surviving a fire, but what about at night? Will your smoke alarm wake you, or your children, in time? Dorothy Bruck, a psychology professor at Victoria University in Melbourne Australia has been working on that problem. She spoke with The Health Show's Dr. David Carpenter about how difficult it can be to wake up a sleeping child.
