Bill aims to improve disaster prep
This past summer Senator Richard Burr, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness, introduced the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act. The bi-partisan bill proposes to improve public health and medical preparedness and responses during emergencies and disasters. The bill was recently passed unanimously by both houses of Congress and, after going through a conference committee, will be sent to the President. Here to talk about this important health legislation is Dr. David Marcozzi, a faculty member in the department of emergency medicine and director of disaster preparedness at Duke University Hospital. He's also a former fellow for the subcommittee on bioterrorism and public health preparedness in the US Senate.

Watching the food supply
Preparing for disasters is one thing, but what happens if the everyday things we count on, like safe food, are threatened? We hear about it all the time: mad cow, avian flu, mercury-contaminated fish, even deadly tacos. Every day there seems to be a new threat to the US food supply. But how real is the risk and are consumers worried? Tanya Ott checked it out.

Holiday food safety
‘Tis the season to be eating. From Thanksgiving through the new year some of our favorite delicacies will hit the holiday table and many of them require special precautions to keep them free from bacteria. Since nothing spoils the festive holiday spirit like a case of salmonella, we sent The Health Show’s Pat Bradley out for some tips on preparing our holiday favorites safely.

Dr. Steve on healthy holidays
From toddlers to teens, the holidays season can be magical for children. It can also hold a hidden hazard or bellyache. Hear to talk about making it a safe holiday for the kids is The Health Show’s pediatric consultant, Dr. Stephen Muething. He’s associate director of general pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
