So, where were you in April of 1988? Ronald Regan was in the final year of his presidency, The Last Emperor won the academy award for Best Picture, Sonny Bono was elected mayor of Palm Springs and the number one song was Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror”. On April 5th of 1988, a new radio show debuted on WAMC radio in Albany, New York called “The Public Radio Health Show”. Now, on the 1000th edition of The Health Show, we’ll take a look back at that first show...and find out that health issues haven’t really changed all that much in a thousand weeks. We’ll also talk about some drugs that made recent headlines, including a new birth control pill that eliminates monthly periods...and concern over the safety of a widely used diabetes medication.

The Health Show - The First 1000 Weeks!
On April 5, 1988 the first edition of the Public Radio Health Show aired on Northeast Public Radio. Listeners heard stories about C-sections, circumcision, doctor patient communication, steroids in sports and a new contraception method...subjects we've reported on just recently. Sp what exactly has changed in 19 plus years? To try to answer that we’ve called on someone who should know, Dr. David Carpenter, the original host of this program and now the Director of the Institute of Health and The Environment at the University at Albany.

Periodic Relief?

That’s another subject that was in the news recently with the FDA’s approval of Lybrel, a birth control pill that eliminates a woman’s monthly periods. Dr Kurt Barnhart is the Director of Clinical Research at Penn Fertility Care at the University of Pennsylvania. Bob Barrett asked Dr. Barnhart, if there was a demand for this type of pill or if it just happened?

AVANDIA In Distress
A study released online by the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that Avandia, a pill widely prescribed by doctors to treat type 2 diabetes, actually increases users' risk for heart attack by 43 percent. Avandia is a blockbuster drug...more than 6 million people have taken it and sales topped 2.2 billion last year. Bob Barrett dicussed the situation with Dr. John Buse, the President-Elect for Medicine and Science of the American Diabetes Association and Director of the Diabetes Care Center in the Endocrinology Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill.
