For a while there it was all you heard about. Chickens were dying in Asia, viruses were mutating, infection rates were multiplying and then...well not much of anything. On today’s Health Show we’ll talk about what ever happened to that Avian Flu pandemic that was supposed to be right around the corner. Then we’ll talk to a breast cancer survivor about her new book that’s called a step by step guide to navigating your way from cancer diagnosis to healing. And another survivor will share her thoughts about living with cancer.

So, About That Flu Pandemic...
If you Google the phrase “bird flu pandemic”, you get 347 thousand results. The first one is the US Government’s site Pandemic Flu dot g-o-v...so you see they are still paying attention. Down the page a bit though is a CNN story saying the World Health Organization is predicting a pandemic that could start next week. That story is from 2004. So how worried and prepared should we still be? The Health Show’s Jim Horne recently brought up that very topic with Dr Christian Sandrock, an expert in infectious diseases, and pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of California at Davis Medical Center, specializing in disaster preparedness, emerging infectious diseases, terrorism and other threats to public health. As medical director of the California Preparedness Education Network, he develops educational materials, primarily for providers in rural, border, inner-city and under-served areas of the state.

AFTER SHOCK with author and cancer survivor Puja Thomson
Hearing the word "cancer" from your doctor can trigger a whirlwind of emotions...but once the emotions settle down, one of the most often asked questions is no doubt “Now what?”. This is a question Puja Thomson asked herself when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s taken the work she did to answer that question and created the book “After Shock: From Cancer Diagnosis to Healing”. It’s a step by step guide to help navigate your way through cancer treatment and recovery. The Health Show's Nina Sax asked Puja Thomson that there are so many “coping with cancer” books out there today, why come out with another?
