When we sit down to discuss the topics to cover on The Health Show, we have many different criteria for the decisions we make. Sometimes it’s a breaking story, or new research, or a great interview. And sometimes, it’s because something has a cool name. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll tell about a surgical tool called the Gamma Knife! We’ll also hear a report on a minimally invasive procedure to help control strokes. Dr. Stephanie Beling arrives with a miracle cure for, well, just about everything. And we’ll hear how a California family is supporting their son who is fighting obesity.

THE INCREDIBLE GAMMA KNIFE!
When many of us visualize brain surgery, we picture a highly skilled surgeon with steady hands probing deep into the brain with a tiny scalpel to excise a tumor. That is because very few of us know about a piece of medical technology that has been around for a while now and is today being used in hospitals around the country. It is the futuristic sounding Gamma Knife. The Health Show’s Jim Horne spoke with Dr Young Kwok, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Maryland Medical School who saves people on a regular basis with the help of the Gamma Knife.

Surgery...Without The Surgery
Technology is becoming so advanced that some brain surgery doesn’t require a knife...gamma or otherwise. It’s brain surgery without the surgery, also called minimally invasive, and according to many doctors, it’s allowing patients to reduce their risk of a stroke, including those who wouldn’t be able to withstand a brain operation. Here’s Andi McDonnell with more.

A Family's Fight Against Obesity
It’s predicted that US life expectancy will fall dramatically in the coming years, largely because of obesity. According to research from the University of Illinois at Chicago, within the next fifty years, obesity will likely shorten the average American’s life span by two to five years. If this turns out to be the case, it would reverse what has been basically a two century increase in the American life expectancy. Reporter Martine Polycarpe visited with one family very familiar with this issue and tells us how they decided to support their eleven year old son who has been learning healthier ways to eat and exercise. This report was produced by David Barasoain.
