Medical emergencies come in many different guises. But the majority of them have one thing in common...eventually, you’re gonna need some blood. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll find out how that blood gets from the arm of a donor...to the operating suite of your local hospital. Then we’ll introduce you to Leslie Gibson...a registered nurse who works with the seriously sick and the dying...and tries to crack them up!

LOVE IN VEIN
The more poetic among us might describe blood as the river of life. To a scientist or doctor it’s a mix of water, cells and plasma that carries oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body. If you stop producing it correctly or lose too much of it due to injury or surgery, you’ll likely be a candidate for a blood transfusion. But how does the blood you are given on the operating table get there in the first place? The Health Show’s Steve Felano followed the journey blood takes as it leaves the body of a donor and enters that of a recipient.

Leslie Gibson - Registered Comic
Leslie Gibson is a registered nurse who has spent much of her career trying to integrate humor into health care, hospitals and hospice. In 1988, she used a grant from the Saratoga, New York based Humor Project to jump-start the most extensive and successful hospital humor program in the world. The Health Show’s Joe Donahue spoke recently with Leslie Gibson about how she came to this line of work…
