According to estimates by the National Cancer Institute, over 178 thousand women will be diagnosed this year with Breast Cancer...and over 40 thousand will die. The single most important key to being one of the survivors is early detection of the disease. On today’s Health Show, we’ll talk to a Mayo Clinic expert about the first line of defense against Breast Cancer. Then we’ll take a look at organizations that collect donated hair and make wigs for cancer and other low income patients. You’ll be surprised to find out where most of that hair goes. And we’ll visit a neighborhood business that is helping get Breast Cancer information out to women who need it most.

BREAST CANCER - EARLY DETECTION IS STILL THE KEY
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. You’ll no doubt be hearing and reading about treatment options and aftercare all month...but when it comes to Breast cancer...early detection is the key to survival. Hear to talk about detection techniques is Dr. Sandhya Pruthi, director of the Mayo Breast Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Nina Sax talks to Dr. Pruthi about early breast cancer detection and screening.

Where's The Hair?
It’s become all the rage in some beauty salons: donating freshly shampooed and cut long hair to Locks Of Love. The non-profit group provides hairpieces to low income children with medical hair loss. But as Jacqueline Froelich found out...many of those donated ponytails and braids are sold for cash or even tossed out.

Cut, Shampoo & Breast Cancer Education
While we’re on the subject of hair, we thought we’d bring back a story we told you about earlier this year. African American women die of breast cancer at much higher rates than other women, and that has health care workers looking for new ways to reach these women with messages about prevention. In Birmingham, Alabama, a one-of-a-kind program takes that message to an unlikely place. Tanya Ott reports.
