What in1985 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Week has grown into a month long national campaign that is difficult to miss. On today’s Health Show, we continue to observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with stories from both sides of this disease: the doctor and the patient. We start with medicine, and a report on targeting chemotherapy...and perhaps narrowing the target so some patients avoid the drugs altogether. We’ll also find out that getting pregnant after Breast Cancer treatment is still an option for many woman. From the other side, a group of breast cancer survivors have posed for a new calendar wearing nothing but a smile...and a Mardi Gras mask...to show there is life after mastectomy. And an author will share her letters to and from a friend who died of the disease.

You Can't Top This Calendar!
A breast cancer BRCA gene test is a blood test to check for specific mutations in genes that help determine your risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. This test is usually done for people with a strong family history of breast cancer and sometimes for those who already have the disease. Counseling before and after a BRCA test is very important to help you understand the benefits, risks, and possible outcomes of the test. Sue Friedman is a breast cancer survivor and the Executive Director of FORCE, an acronym for Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered. It’s a group devoted to providing support and people at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. This year they have published a fund raising and eyebrow raising calendar featuring pictures of women who have undergone bilateral mastectomy posing topless...to showcase many types of breast reconstruction and non-reconstruction options. The Health Show's Bob Barrett spoke with Dr. Friedman about how her experience with breast cancer led to the formation of FORCE.

Love, Nancy
Doctors and patients are almost always the story when talking about Breast cancer. But almost always there are other people just off to the side, the families and friends who are living with the disease as supporters or confidantes. Ruth Haag is one of those people. She maintained a long distance relationship with her friend Nancy, while Nancy fought and eventually died of Breast Cancer. She has collected their letters in a new book called Love, Nancy: Letters from a Friend with Breast Cancer. The Health Show's Bob Barrett spoke with Ruth Haag and asked her “just who was Nancy?”.
