Maybe it’s because we’re doing three shows on the topic, but it seems like Breast Cancer Awareness Month is getting a lot more attention this year. Today’s Health Show is the third episode of that trilogy. We’ll hear from a surgeon and a radiologist from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City...talking about the latest advances in detection and treatment of Breast Cancer. Then we’ll hear from a Breast Cancer survivor about what happens after all the doctors have finished their work...and the patient starts the process of healing.

BREAST CANCER DETECTION - RADIOLOGY
Obviously, before any breast cancer treatment begins the disease must be detected...and the earlier the detection, the better the chance for a cure. Regular breast self examination is an, perhaps the most important first step in detecting breast cancer. Then there’s mammography and other breast imaging techniques. Dr. Elise Desperito is the Director of Breast Imaging at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. I spoke with her this week and asked what are the current guidelines for women to start getting regular mammograms.

Super Healing
Treatment for breast cancer, or any disease can leave our bodies, and spirits battered and weak and in serious need of healing. Dr Julie Silver is a breast cancer survivor and is the author of Super Healing: The Clinically Proven Plan to Maximize Recovery from Illness or Injury. Dr. Silver is a physiatrist, a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. She is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. Bob Barrett asked Dr. Silver if her experience with breast cancer fueled her interest in this topic.
