Over two trillion dollars will be spent this year in the United States on health care. That’s a massive, almost incomprehensible number...and most experts agree that it will be going nowhere but up in the future. On today’s Health Show, we’ll talk about a new report from Consumer Reports Magazine that offers one explanation about the huge rise. Then a conversation with Dr. Barbara Hansen, one of the world’s leading experts on obesity, about her common sense methods for losing weight...believe it or not, it involves eating less. And we’ll hear from our incredible shrinking commentator, whose bathroom scale has gone from appliance, to obsession.

CONSUMER REPORTS 10 MOST OVERUSED MEDICAL PROCEDURES
An investigation by Consumer Reports published in their November issue offers some idea of why they say American health care has become so incredibly expensive. The rather long title of the report is: Ten Overused Medical Tests and Treatments...How U.S. Health Care Bill Got To Record-Breaking 2 Trillion Dollars: Too Much Treatment, Too Many Drugs, And Too Little Preventive Care. It spells out ways consumers can navigate a health-care system that they say rewards costly...and often unnecessary...tests and procedures and de-emphasizes preventive care. The report estimates that the nation's 2 trillion dollar annual health-care tab is one-third to one-half higher than need be, in part because of overuse of the reports calls expensive treatments and unnecessary care. The Health Show’s Jim Horne spoke with Nancy Metcalf, senior project editor at Consumer Reports.

Eat Less, Lose Weight...BRILLIANT!
It’s doubtful that Dr Barbara Hanson will ever write a catchy, best selling diet book with radical weight loss schemes. Dr. Hansen’s research has brought her to a simple conclusion: the only way to lose weight is to eat less calories...PERIOD. Dr. Hansen’s latest studies with rhesus monkeys have shown that lifetime calorie restraint to prevent obesity is the most powerful way to reduce age-related health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Dr. Hansen recently spoke with Radio Netherlands’ Thijs Westerbeek as she was about to give a lecture on obesity prevention.

Measuring Up
It starts out as a flirtation. You get together all excited once or twice a week, little or no clothing involved, and it almost always leaves you with a satisfied smile. But, inevitably, it becomes a daily obsession. It’s your relationship with the bathroom scale...something commentator Sandy Daigler knows all too well.
