One of the great things about doing this show is meeting and talking to some of the most interesting people in the medical and health care fields...and getting paid to do it! On this week’s Health Show, we’ll reintroduce you to some of our favorite people. We’ll meet a nurse from Toronto who has been a care taker her whole life...both at home and halfway around the world. Then it’s the lady who’s was trying to get over her failed relationship...with her doctor. And we’ll hear the thoughts, trials and dreams of three people living with life threatening cancer.

THE MAKING OF A NURSE
Tilda Shalof has been a care giver all her life...from when she was a child taking care of her sick parents to her current position on an ICU team in one of Canada’s largest hospitals. After graduation from nurse’s college, and finding no jobs in Toronto, Shalof traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel, to work in a hospital for the first time. Her experiences in becoming a nurse are now part of her second book on nursing: The Making of a Nurse. Bob Barrett asked if her background of caring for sick parents prepared her for her career...and if many nurses follow the same path.

Dumped At The Medical Altar
Anyone who’s moved to a new community and has tried to find a new primary care doctor is very familiar with the phrase “Sorry, we’re not accepting new patients”. But now, some doctors are paring down their practices by saying goodbye to some old patients. That’s what happened to Susan Reverby and frankly, she’s feeling a little jilted.

Voices Of Cancer
On this program it’s very easy to talk about cancer as a thing, a consequence...something that needs to be researched and battled and studied some more. What is sometimes difficult to remember is that cancer is a living invader inside a real person...someone with dreams, a family...a life. A little over a year ago, Bob Barrett sat down with three of those people. Maureen Kearns, a retired elementary school teacher...Mark Burke, an electrician and musician...and George Lewis, a dairy farmer and manager of a roofing business. When they spoke, all three were being treated for cancer and lived in Southern Vermont...and all three have a lot to say about living with cancer.
