The word “steroids” has become an unavoidable part of the language of sports in America...and around the world. On today’s Health Show we’ll hear how a Pacific Northwest city is dealing with the growing stigma of the performance enhancing drugs as the prepare for the upcoming Olympic track and field trials. Then we’ll hear about herbs...specifically the fear in some ethnic communities that the knowledge of their natural healing properties is dying off with the country’s elders. And we’ll get a report on the pressure the boomer generation is feeling as both their parents and kids age.

TRACK & FIELD...AND STEROIDS
As excitement builds in Eugene, Oregon about the 2008 Olympic Trials, so does the stigma surrounding United States Track and Field. In October, Marion Jones, once the face of her sport, admitted to a federal judge she lied about using performance-enhancing drugs at the peak of her career. She was sentenced to six months in jail last week. In a sport based on pushing the body to its physical limits, some athletes are blurring the line between natural and unnatural performance by turning to dangerous, new-age steroids, some undetectable through modern drug testing. Andrew Bartholomew examines the steroid controversy - and what impact it will have on Eugene when the trials roll into "Track Town."

Where Has All The Herb Lore Gone?
Nothing could be further away from the use of artificial, steroid enhanced performances than the natural healing power of herbs. Many people think society is losing much of the accumulated cultural knowledge about herbs and natural healing as a lot of people with that knowledge are dying without passing it on. Kyle Norris reports.

The Kids Are Gone...But Here Comes Mom & Dad
Baby boomers are reaching that point in life when the kids are older and off on their own and all that responsibility and expense are gone with them. It is time to relax and start taking care of themselves. But for many boomers a whole new set of responsibilities have popped up because they are caring for their elderly parents or relatives. They face a whole new set of issues as they enter a complex world of medicine and law and issues like adult day care, durable power of attorney, estate planning, home health care, dementia and so on. The AARP estimates that 34 million Americans serve as unpaid care givers for other adults, and that they spend an average of 21 hours a week helping out. The Health Show’s Jim Horne spoke with people who are dealing with some these issues and others who can help with this enormous responsibility.
