No matter have much study is done, no matter how much technology is improved...is seems there will always be mysteries in medicine. Here’s one that still has researches scratching their heads...African-Americans between the ages of 45 and 64 are 2 and a half times more likely to die from heart failure than Caucasians in the same age range. On this week’s Health Show, we may not find the answer...but maybe we’ll better understand the question. We’ll also take a heart-friendly trip to the grocery store...and find out from a nutritionist how to make the best choices amidst the canned goods. And we’ll visit with an NBA owner who is also a women’s health crusader.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HEART DISEASE
The numbers don’t really tell the story, but they make a compelling headline. About 45% of African American men...and 49% of African American women age 20 and older suffer from some form of Cardiovascular Disease. That compares with 37 & 35% for white men and women. Here to talk about it is Dr. Elijah Saunders, a Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Heart Healthy Grocery Shopping
Here’s a shocking statement: What you eat can have huge impact on your heart health. Okay, that’s no big revelation...but many of us are still making less than prudent choices while cruising down the aisles of the grocery store. Sister To Sister - Everybody Has A Heart
If you were to sit down and try to draw a map that connects the National Basketball Association with women’s health...you’d have to start in Washington, DC. Along with her husband Abe, Irene Pollin has been the owner of the Washington Wizards for 42 years. During that time, Pollin started the “Wives Save Lives” breast cancer awareness program and created the Medical Crisis Counseling Center at the Washington Hospital Center. She has also authored two books on health-related topics and, in 2000, founded the Sister to Sister, Everyone Has A Heart Foundation, an organization focused women and heart disease. Last May, Howard University awarded Mrs. Pollin an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. The Health Show's Jim Horne spoke with Irene Pollin about the work being done by the Sister to Sister Foundation.
