Ruth Peltason wanted to do something. A two time breast cancer survivor, she knew how difficult it was to find someone who understood what she was going through. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll find out how Ruth built a worldwide community of fellow survivors. We’ll also get a report on a new study about why some women choose mastectomy and breast reconstruction...and we’ll hear from the director of actress Ricki Lake’s new documentary on women who are choosing to give birth at home called “The Business Of Being Born”.

I AM NOT MY BREAST CANCER
Ruth Peltason is a survivor. After undergoing treatment for breast cancer a second time, she wanted to find a way to combat the isolation someone in treatment can feel. First, she created an on-line forum called “First Person Plural”, where hundreds of women from every state and across the world shared their personal breast cancer stories. Now those stories have been put together in the book “I Am Not My Breast Cancer”. Dr. Nina Sax spoke with Ruth Peltason and asked how the book got it’s name.

Mastectomy & Breast Reconstruction - Does Counseling Make A Difference?
About 220,000 women are diagnosed with breast each year, and about 70 percent of those patients will be treated with mastectomy. But a new study finds most women do not get information on surgical reconstruction from their surgeons at the time of treatment and planning. The Health Show’s Sarah Laduke has more.

HEALTH UPDATE with Dr. Philip Stieg

Documenting The Business Of Being Born
When actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake had her first child it was a less than ideal experience. She was induced, stuck to a fetal monitor with IV’s in her arms and pretty much told exactly when and where the baby was coming out. When she got pregnant again, she was determined to have an in-home water delivery. That birth, and the experiences of many women who have chosen home births are the subject of the new documentary “The Business of Being Born”. With Lake as executive producer and Abby Epstein directing, the film gives a sometimes graphic view of the consequences of medical intervention during child birth...and the movement of some women towards having midwives deliver their child at home. Bob Barrett spoke with Abby Epstein about how she came to make this film.
