Heart Disease continues to be the number one killer in America, and more and more of us know someone who has undergone a heart operation...usually a coronary bypass, or the insertion of a stent to open up a clogged artery. But what is a stent and is it as effective as surgery or medication? On this week’s Health Show, we’ll talk to one of the country’s lead experts on stents to find out. We’ll also talk to the Academy Award winning director of the documentary Freeheld...the story of a woman with terminal cancer’s fight to have her same sex partner receive the pension benefits she earned...benefits married couples automatically get.

TO STENT OR NOT TO STENT
Since they were first approved by the FDA in 1994, millions of Americans have had their heart disease treated with stents. Recently, there has been growing controversy about different types of stents and medications...so we found one of the country’s leading experts on stents to talk about these life saving devices. Dr Deepak Bhatt is the associate director of the Cleveland Clinic Cardiovascular Coordinating Center and is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and interventional cardiology. Dr Nina Sax asked him to give us a quick description of stents and how they are used.

Baxter International Recalls its Heparin...ALL OF IT
One of the drugs Dr. Bhatt talked about earlier was Heparin, a blood thinner that’s sued to help prevent clotting around stents and other invasive procedures. But in the past month there have been reports of reactions and some deaths to one company’s supply of Heparin. Now, Baxter International, one of the main manufacturers of Heparin, has recalled its entire inventory of the drug after the Food & Drug Administration said Baxter’s product may have been responsible for up to 21 patient deaths. Heparin is made from pig intestines and Baxter’s supply came from China. Here to talk about what this means for both the medical and regulatory world is Dr Orly Avitzur, a medical advisor for Consumer Union and associate medical editor of Consumer Reports magazine. Bob Barrett asked her to tell us about Heparin and why its important.
