On January 21, there was a story on CNN dot com with the headline: Some Worry Nursing Shortage Could Put Patients At Risk. That was January 21, 2001. Here on the other end of the decade we’re still talking about the shortage of nurses and nursing teachers. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll talk to the dean of one of the country’s leading nursing programs to see if there is relief in sight. We’ll also find out about a group of medical students who are putting their school experiences in writing to give a better picture of med school than you find on TV...and we’ll hear how many women are using their birth control pills to bring periodic changes in their life.

NURSING SHORTAGE...STILL!
If you google the phrase “nursing shortage”, the first page of results has news stories going back almost 10 years. It does seem like we’ve been talking about the shortage of nurses for quite some time. So what’s the story...is there still a nursing shortage? Here to give us some answers is Dr. Harriet R. Feldman, the long-time dean of the Lienhard School of Nursing at Pace University. Dean Feldman holds a PhD from NYU in nursing science, is an RN, and a Fellow of the American Association of Nursing. She is editor in chief of the Encyclopedia of Nursing Leadership. Bob Barrett asked Dr.Feldman the obvious question first: are we still in a nursing shortage?

The Pill For Periodic Relief
Many women are opting for skipping their periods all together. Over the past few years new birth control pills have been introduced to the market that control menstruation cycles, some allowing women to go years without having a period. While some feel this gives women more control over their lives, others worry about potential physical effects. The Health Show's Jill Rontey has this report.
