On this week’s Health Show, we’ll talk to the head of an on line support group about kids with food allergies...and what needs to be done to protect them from things like...the lunch room. Then we’ll hear the history of the drug Warfarin and find out why so many companies are working so hard to find a way to make it obsolete. Food allergies are not common...but they can be deadly. The Award Goes to...FREEHELD!
Detective Lieutenant Laurel Hester spent 25 years investigating tough cases in Ocean County, New Jersey...a career that continued until she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Unknown to her, that diagnosis would be the beginning of her most public battle...the fight to transfer her police pension to her domestic partner Stacie Andree. Their story is the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary “Freeheld”, which chronicles Laurel's struggle with her elected officials - the Ocean County Freeholders - who repeatedly deny her request to leave the pension she earned to Stacie, a benefit which is automatic for heterosexual married couples. Cynthia Wade is director of “Freeheld”. Bob Barrett spoke with her before the film was even nominated for the best documentary - short subject Oscar and asked what brought her to Laurel’s story.
