Recently, when the southeast Asian country of Myanmar has been in the news, there has been little good to report. The 50 million residents have been under military rule in one form or another since 1962. Even the country’s name is a subject of controversy. It’s still known as Burma to the US State Department, which does not recognize the current military regime or the new name is was given in 1989. But with all the political unrest...and more recently, natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis this May...there is another cloud over the country: Myanmar has one of the largest AIDS epidemics in Asia. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll air a special documentary from Radio Netherlands about the AIDS crisis in the country of Myanmar.

AIDS IN MYANMAR - PART 1
It seems that Myanmar, also known as Burma, only comes to the world’s attention during times of tragedy and unrest. In recent years there have been violent political demonstrations on the streets of the country...and this year tens of thousands were killed by Cyclone Nargis while the military rulers of Myanmar held the world’s offers of help at bay. But there is an untold tragedy in Myanmar...one that continues to grow on a daily basis: the largest epidemic of AIDS in Asia. To highlight this problem, we are presenting a documentary from Radio Netherlands. It originally appeared on the program “Earthbeat”...produced and presented by Radio Netherlands’ Dheera Sujan. It’s been edited only to fit in our time format.

AIDS IN MYANMAR - PART 2
Despite the growing number of HIV infections in Myanmar, the society still considers itself conservative...keeping the subject in whispers. The lack of frank discussion about HIV leads to widespread stigma and discrimination...and when it comes to the Myanmar’s gay community, the consequences are even greater.
