THE WEIGHT IS GONE - WHAT'S WITH ALL THE SKIN?
For the tens of thousands of morbidly obese Americans who undergo bariatric or weight loss surgery every year...the stomach reducing procedure is just the first step back to health and self esteem. Patients must stick to a strict diet for the rest of their lives, and as the weight comes off, many are left with pounds of excess skin just hanging off their shrinking forms. For many, the next step is a series of operations collectively called body contouring, where plastic surgeons remove this excess tissue and try to restore the body to a more aesthetically pleasing condition. Here to talk about these procedures is Dr. Jason Spector, an assistant professor of Plastic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. I asked Dr. Spector, what can happen to a person’s appearance when they lose so much weight.

Germans Are Getting Larger
People in industrialized nations are getting taller...and fatter. But no one really knows for sure how bodies are changing. In Germany, the last time anyone surveyed people’s body sizes was back in 1956. You might wonder why we need to survey bodies at all. Well, think about clothes, or getting in and out of car or bus seats. Germans will soon know how big they really are. The “Size Germany” project is touring the country, using high-tech 3D body scanners to measure 12-thousand Germans. DW Radio's Kate Hairsine reports.
