During the 1940 and 50s, Polio was about the scariest word you could say around children in the US and western Europe. By the late 50s and early 60s, the Polio vaccine had begun taking the fear out of the word. Today, the disease has been eliminated from most of the world. Only seven countries world-wide remain polio-endemic with 98 percent of all global cases are found in India, Nigeria and Pakistan. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll hear about the efforts to vaccinate children in one of those countries. We’ll also talk with a certified mid-wife who specializes in home birth...and hear about her career as a mid-wife...and a movie star.

FIGHTING POLIO IN PAKISTAN
The World Health Organization is worried about a resurgence of polio. If you’re old enough, you might remember being lined up at school and given a drop of polio vaccine. It was part of a polio eradication program that began in earnest in the 1950s...when Jonas Salk invented the vaccine...and led to a 99% drop in the number of new cases in the last 20 years worldwide. Pakistan had never quite managed to get rid of the disease. Health workers there have started going door-to-door to give free polio vaccinations, but they’re not always welcome. The World Vision Report’s Will Everett has more.

We recently spoke about the importance of keeping immunizations up to date with Dr. Paul Offit, chief of infectious diseases at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Cara Muhlhahn's Labor Of Love
About a year ago we featured an interview with Abby Epstein, the director of Ricki Lake’s documentary film about home birth called The Business Of Being Born. In that film we met Cara Muhlhahn, a home birth mid-wife who’s practice was a major part of the film. Cara has now written a book about her life as a mid-wife called The Labor Of Love. She spoke with Bob Barrett about the book, her career and her driving.
