A life can change forever in the blink of an eye. One wrong step, one wrong turn, one bad hit could cause a traumatic brain injury. The severity of such an injury may range from mild to severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least 3.17 million Americans currently have a long-term or lifelong need for help to perform activities of daily living as a result of a traumatic brain injury. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll visit a center that uses creativity and compassion to try and reach a lost mind. Then we’ll hear about a British woman who is fighting for the rights of the terminally ill to get life prolonging drugs from the National Health.

TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY - HEALING WITH CREATIVITY
It happens in the blink of an eye. A wrong step and a fall. A drunk driver and a collision. A traumatic brain injury is almost always something that no one can see coming. Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. The symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. A person with a mild TBI may experience a loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes, have a headache, act confused or experience lightheadedness, blurred vision or tired eyes. Bob Barrett recently toured the Northeast Center for Special Care in Lake Katrine, New York.

You Gotta Fight For Your Right For Life Prolonging Drugs
There has been a fight going on in Great Britain about whether patients have a right to drugs that ease pain, fight disease, and even prolong life. As you’d expect, the most effective drugs for the worst conditions...like terminal cancer...are usually also the most expensive. Much more than individuals can afford without assistance. While Britain has national health care, every local branch of the National Health has its own policy on providing life prolonging cancer drugs and thousands of people across the UK have been denied access to the meds. As Radio Netherlands’ Marybeth Dean reports, one British woman has been fighting on their behalf since her mother died of cancer two years ago.
