A H1-N1. That’s the official name for the virus that everyone is calling the Swine Flu. The first outbreaks of the flu came from a rural region of Mexico...but is there anything about that region that makes it a good place for an epidemic to take root. On today’s Health Show, we’ll talk to the former president of the US/Mexico Foundation for Science and try to find out. We’ll also go around the world and see how other countries are dealing with the flu...including what they are calling it. And we’ll find out that losing weight is a good idea now that the saber tooth tigers are gone.

SWINE FLU ORIGINS - MEXICO
Have you gotten your fill of news and information about the Swine Flu yet? It does seem like whenever a threat to public health makes it to the main stream media the result resembles feeding time at the shark house. But somewhere in the noise there is good information to be found.
We wanted to talk to someone who is familiar with the region of Mexico where the first cases of flu were reported. Dr Susan Scrimshaw is the president of the Sage Colleges of upstate New York and the former president of the Association of Schools of Public Health. She has also served as the president of the US/Mexico Foundation for Science.

The Swine Flu & The Canadians
While the flu outbreak may have gotten its start south of the border, to the north health officials in Canada have started playing down the severity of the virus. The reason? Even though there have been over one hundred confirmed cases of the flu, they were mild and the patients are recovering. When the outbreak first hit Canada, many comparisons were made to the SARS crisis of 2003...and some Canadian experts say public health officials were more prepared this time because of the lessons of SARS. But as Dan Karpenchuk reports, the swine flu outbreak has an unusual Canadian twist.

Who You Callin' Swine?
European Union ministers held an emergency meeting on the spread of the virus, but managing the disease isn't the only challenge the leaders faced. Sales of pork have plummeted to an all time low...so much so that the name of the illness is being re-examined. Radio Netherlands’ Olly Barratt reports.
