Lately there has been a lot of talk about health insurance and what to do for the millions of Americans that are uninsured. But there is another conversation going on, one that often gets drowned out by the big story. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll hear from a former Washington State legislator who is also an activist for mental healthcare parity. We’ll also take you to a noisy rally in Massachusetts held by people demanding single payer, universal health care in the US. And we’ll also revisit the topic of the HPV virus...this time from the male point of view.

EQUAL HEALTH CARE ABOVE THE NECK
If you have health insurance, you are probably at least fleetingly familiar with your co-pays and your referral system and which hospitals are in your network. But do you know how much coverage you have for mental health? For years, mental health advocates have been trying to have legislation passed for mental health parity in health insurance coverage. Last year that federal legislation passed as part of the federal stimulus package...but some are calling the law weak, at least much weaker than some state laws. One of those people is Randy Revelle, senior vice president of the Washington State Hospital Association and former county executive in King County Washington.

A MASSive Rally For Universal Healthcare
The state of Massachusetts is being held up as a possible model for national health care reform. But some in the state say that model is flawed, and only a single payer system will do. Demonstrations were held through out Massachusetts last month to push for that system and The Health Show’s Charlie Deitz reports on one event in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

HPV - The Male Perspective
For more than two years, many girls and young women in the United States have been receiving a vaccine designed to help prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine prevents several types of the human papillomavirus, which causes genital warts as well as most cancers of the cervix. But HPV isn’t just a problem for women. Men can also get genital warts, and scientists are increasingly finding links between the virus and a host of other cancers in both genders. Now the makers of the first HPV vaccine on the market have asked regulators for permission to vaccinate boys and young men. Sarah McCammon reports.
Sarah McCammon had help with this report from Jean Snedegar, Soundprint Media Center, NET Radio, the University of Nebraska, and SEPA at National Institutes of Health.
