Okay, a quick show of hands...how many of you are looking forward to spending your senior years in a nursing home? Even if I could see you right now, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t see your hands. But millions of Americans will need nursing home care in their final days. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll talk to a psychologist and author about the nursing home industry and why he calls life nasty, brutish and long”. We’ll also find out why managing medications is one of the most important aspects of senior care. And we’ll hear from a reporter in Germany who’s search for a way to feel better after a bout with the flu led her to a room full of salt.

NASTY, BRUTISH & LONG
Nobody dreams of some day making it to a nursing home. But, for better or worse, that’s where many of us will spend our final days. With lack of funding, staff and services...not to mention non-existent privacy...the nursing home industry seems ripe for an expose. That, however, is not what this segment is about. Ira Rosofsky is a psychologist who specializes in visiting residents of nursing homes. In his new book “Nasty, Brutish and Long - Adventures in Old Age and the World of Elder Care”, Ira paints a picture of the modern nursing home that is at times depressing, hilarious and sentimental. We spoke recently and I asked him where he got the title for his book.

High Salt, High Reward?
Keeping salt out of your diet is one of the most common tips you hear for staying healthy. However there are those who believe that salt has healing properties that assist people in dealing with stress and myriad of health issues that can strike at any time. A new business in Berlin is promoting the benefits of salt and has created a salt room spa with whole rooms made up entirely of salt. Radio Netherlands’ Peta Jenkin went to experience the effects.
