Here’s a tip for anyone looking into producing a program about health...if you want to get some nasty hate mail, do a show about Lyme Disease. We ran a segment earlier in the spring and yup, we got a few really good ones. On this week’s Health Show...why not, let’s take another shot...we’ll take a look at the vocal minority of people who believe that chronic, long term Lyme disease is a fact. We’ll also hear from a communication’s expert who has not so good grade for the government’s Swine Flu performance. Sandy D explains how losing weight doesn’t mean a quick trip to Nirvana. And the U-K is taking steps to shrink it’s population, at least it’s population’s waistlines.

THE LYME CONSPIRACY
If you have been finding more ticks than usual on your pets or yourself this spring you are not alone. There are indications that the tick population is booming...and that means the discussions about Lyme Disease will be longer and louder as the disease continues to spread. Ulster County, north of New York city in the Hudson River valley has always had a large number of cases...and they also have an official who says she has a personal understanding of what Lyme can do. The Health Show’s Susan Barnett has a report.

You can learn more about Lyme disease from all points of view at:
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society

Swine Communication
When news of the Swine Flu began to break it was nearly impossible to avoid the reports and headlines. But how much real information was getting out...and how did the government do in making sure we were all properly cautioned. Peter Sandman knows all about how tricky getting this type of information out can be. He is a communications expert based in New Jersey who has helped the World Health Organization shape its messages on SARS and Avian Flu. And as Grace Hood reports, he’s a bit critical of the U-S government’s message this time around.

Biggish Brits
A recent report from the UK government says nearly 60% of Britain’s population will be obese by the year 2050. As the problem of obesity spreads across England the government is taking extra effort to combat the problem...designating nine areas with the largest problems as “healthy towns”. These communities will receive a share of 33 million euros targeted at programs to help people keep the extra weight off. Radio Netherland’s Catherine Drew went to one of the cities, Portsmith, to find out what they will be doing with the cash.
