In 1967, over a century and a half after the introduction of the Smallpox vaccine, there were still 10 to 15 millions cases of the disease worldwide. That was the year the world said “enough!”. On today’s Health Show, a discussion with Dr. D.A. Henderson, the man the World Health Organization enlisted to wipe Smallpox off the face of the earth. Then we’ll hear a story that we ran a while ago about a category of health care that is getting a lot more attention this year...concierge doctors.

SMALLPOX - THE DEATH OF A DISEASE
If there was ever a worldwide enemy of humanity, it was Smallpox. That sounds dramatic, but think about it. In the 20th century...one hundred years after the development of a vaccine against the disease, it still killed over 300 million people worldwide. That’s when the World Health Organization made an unprecedented decision: eradicate Smallpox from the face of the Earth. The man they put in charge of that effort was Dr. Donald Ainslie Henderson. Today, D.A. Henderson is a professor of public health and medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He’s written a book about his efforts called Smallpox - The Death Of A Disease: The Inside Story Of Eradicating A Worldwide Killer.

Concierge Doctors
In the avalanche of stories about the death of entertainer Michael Jackson we heard a term that we’ve covered before here on The Health Show: concierge doctors. Not only are we hearing about the private physician that was at Jackson’s beck and call...but there’s even a new TV series on the USA network about a reluctant concierge doctor in the Hamptons called Royal Pains. To refresh our collective memories about concierge doctors, here’s a report we aired on the topic a few years ago from The Health Show’s Pat Bradley.
