No Smoked Turkey, Please
A group of café owners has applied to the parliamentary Human Rights Commission in Turkey, demanding that a recently introduced smoking ban, prohibiting smoking in all indoor areas, including cafes, bars and restaurants, be lifted. Protesting the ban, which took effect on July 19, many bar and coffeehouse owners say the new regulation violates human rights and that the rules are too strict to follow. A considerable part of Turkish society, however, has embraced the new ban, suggesting that the ban comes as a revolutionary step against smoking, which claims thousands of lives annually in Turkey. Radio Netherlands’ Dorian Jones took to the streets of Istanbul to get some unofficial reaction.

Thousands of people die each year due to misuse of and adverse reactions to prescribed medication. Robert Gold is an Affiliate Instructor of Clinical Pharmacy at Purdue University and the author of The Forensic Pharmacist.
