We’ve been hearing an old Washington DC cliche a lot over the past few weeks...two things you don’t want to watch being made are sausages and laws. The way the current debate over health care reform is going, the sausage factory is starting to look good. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll try to get it all explained, slowly and with small words. Then we’ll hear about a new survey that shows an alarming number of E-R nurses suffer violence on the job...and we’ll head to a European town that’s going all vegetarian, but only on Thursdays.

HEALTH CARE REFORM SCHOOL
In the 6 months since President Obama took office the issue that has gotten the most discussion in Washington is health care reform. So much discussion about so many different plans and options that we though it’s about time to bring in someone who can boil all the action down and let us know where everything stands as congress goes into their summer recess. That someone is Timothy Hoff, PhD, an associate professor of health policy and management at the University of Albany School Of Public Health in Albany, New York...and is the author of "Practice Under Pressure: A Study of the U.S. Primary Care System”, available this fall from Rutgers Press.
You can find some of Dr. Hoff's editorials on health care reform here and here.

Nurses & Violence In The ER
A new study by the Emergency Nurses Association finds that more than half of emergency nurses report experiencing physical violence on the job...and half of those nurses have experienced such violence more than 20 times in the past three years. Bill Briggs is the president of the Emergency Nurses Association and joins us to talk about this survey.

Veggie Thursday
When you think Belgium, healthy eating is not the next automatic thought. With lots of fats and sweets, the country is traditionally known for its hearty, and some might say heart threatening cuisine. But for one day a week, the citizens of Ghent, a town about 50 kilometers west of Brussels, are being encouraged to ignore the beef, pork and poultry and concentrate on produce. Radio Netherlands’ Marnie Chesterton took a trip to Ghent for Vegetarian Thursday to see how the idea is catching on.
