With all the shouting about socialism and Hitler and death panels, it’s understandable that some people have completely tuned out the debate on heath insurance reform. But somewhere underneath all the noise and foolishness, a good idea has gotten a bad rap. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll talk about palliative care...it’s a lot more than just hospice. We’ll also hear about a new tool in the fight against heroin and other opiod addictions. And then another story about addiction...or at least potential; addiction. It seems young Italians have started drinking like Americans...and old Italians are not pleased.

PALLIATIVE CARE - A GOOD IDEA GETS A BAD REP
One of the big controversies in the health care reform debate, for reasons defying logic, involves paying doctors to discuss end of life or palliative care with their patients. We’ve covered the topic of palliative care many times on The Health Show but perhaps a refresher is needed. To help us out we called on Dr. Gail Austin Cooney. Dr. Cooney is a neurologist and is the current president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She is also a medical director of Hospice of Palm Beach County in West Palm Beach, Florida. I asked Dr. Cooney to give us a quick definition of palliative care.

A New Tool To Fight Addiction
In the US there are hundreds of thousands of people who are addicted to opioids, drugs like heroin, OxyContin, Percocet and among others. For years, these addictions have been treated with methadone, another opiod. But this decade another drug, Buprenorphine, has been successfully used in opiod addiction treatment. Here to talk about this is Dr. Marilyn Huestis, the chief of chemistry and drug metabolism at the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institute of Health.

Young Italians Drink Like Young Americans
Italians are known for enjoying a glass of wine with lunch or dinner. But usually with moderation. Getting drunk is frowned upon. But that seems to have changed among Italy’s teen-agers. A growing youth binge drinking problem has prompted the city of Milan to take action. An ordinance getting a trial run prohibits Italians under 16 from drinking in public or buying alcohol. The parents of the violators face hefty fines. Also those who sell or give alcohol to the teens will be punished. Nancy Greenleese reports from Rome.
