Earlier this year as the first cases of the Swine Flu were sweeping the country there were loud and frequent cries for a vaccine to fight the disease. Now, there’s a vaccine...and there are loud and frequent cries of “not so fast with the new vaccine”. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll explore the different reasons why so many people are avoiding the H1N1 vaccine. Then, as Breast Cancer Awareness month continues, we’ll take another look at genetic testing for Breast cancer...and the need for counseling when a bad test result calls for a life changing decision.

THE SWINE FLU VACCINE: TOO NEW?
Early this year when the Swine Flu first swept across the US, there were constant calls for a vaccine to help prevent the spread of the virus. Now that a vaccine has finally been brought to market...it seems not everyone is enthusiastic. Here to talk about a new survey from Consumer Reports about the H1N1 vaccine is Dr. Orly Avitzur, a practicing neurologist and medical adviser to Consumer Reports. Dr. Avitzur it seems like a lot of people are now really on the fence about getting this vaccine for themselves and especially their children.

The Swine Flu Vaccine And Bio-Ethics?
The questions surrounding the Swine Flu vaccine appear to have more to do with belief than fact. But, as in most everything we do, our personal beliefs go a long way toward dictating our actions. These lofty ideas were just part of a fascinating conversation I had recently with Nancy Berlinger, P-H-D. Well, at least her part was fascinating. Dr. Berlinger is the deputy director and a research scholar at the Hastings Center, a non-partisan research institution dedicated to bio-ethics and the public interest in Garrison, New York.

Genetic For Breast Cancer Testing - What's New Redux
One of the newest tools doctors have in early detection of breast cancer is genetic testing. There are certain mutations to genes called the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 that can predict if a woman is likely to develop breast cancer later in life. Genetic testing was just one of the many topics we touched on last October when Dr. Janet Gargiulo, a medical oncologist at New York Oncology Hematology in Latham, New York, joined us to talk about what was new in Breast Cancer research and treatment.
This conversation was part of our October, 2008 series on what's new in the field of Breast Cancer research and treatment. You can hear the entire series here: PART 1 PART 2

Genetic Testing - Genetic Counseling
Since the testing has been available hundreds of thousands of people have had the genetic tests to see if they carry the mutations that put them at increased risks for cancer. A large percentage of these people will undergo some form counseling before and after the test – where a medical professional helps them review their family histories, assess risk factors, interpret results and discuss what options they have to mitigate their risks. Shia Levitt looks at the growing field of cancer “genetic counseling.”
