In 1981, just 8 percent of all person bankruptcies in the US were blamed on health care expenses. Now, according to a study published this year in The American Journal of Medicine, 62 percent of all personal bankruptcies are a result of someone getting sick in America. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll hear about a group that’s trying to do its part to help. We’ll also hear how low cost health insurance is helping people cope with medical expenses...in the country of Senegal. And we’ll hear the story of a daughter who’s bi-polar mother was the center of her universe.

Finally! Affordable Health Insurance! Uh, In Senegal.
It’s a familiar story: people without health insurance don’t get the care they need. And if they do get medical care, they struggle to pay the bill. We could be talking about any number of countries including the US, but this is Senegal in West Africa, where the vast majority of people are uninsured. Now, there appears to be a solution. The World Vision Report's Jordan Davis reports from Dakar.

The Center Of The Universe
Experts believe there may be a genetic component to depression, and it affects up to ten percent of the population at some point in their lives. About six million of those cases are manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder. It affects men and women equally, and causes wild and unpredictable mood swings that can respond well to medication - but require a willingness to take that medication consistently. The Health Show's Katie Britton recently spoke with Nancy Bachrach, author of the memoir "Center of the Universe", the story of growing up with a mother who was never the same from one day to the next - and then experienced a stunning turnaround after a near fatal accident.
