Do you have high blood pressure? Are you sure? Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms, even if their blood pressure readings get dangerously high. On this week’s Health Show we’ll talk about Hypertension and how to avoid it...or live with it. We’ll also talk about an area of women’s health that get a lot of attention from politicians...but relatively little from the medical community at large: abortion. And we’ll hear an interview we ran a while back with one of few abortion providers in the Midwest.

GETTING HYPER ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Okay, quick quiz: what are the symptoms of high blood pressure? If you don’t have a ready answer, chances are that’s the right answer. Most people with high blood pressure, or hypertension show no symptoms...but they are at serious risk of heart disease, stroke and a number of other health problems. And, according to the CDC, almost a third of Americans are living with hypertension...and many don’t know it. Here to talk about hypertension is Dr. David Meyerson, a Cardiologist at Johns Hopkins and Director of Cardiology Consultative Services at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.

Abortion Training Waning
Women's health advocates are expressing growing concern about access to safe, legal abortions. Federal statistics show the number of abortions performed in the US is down to a rate not seen since the 70s...but that may be because finding a legal abortion provider is becoming increasingly difficult, especially in the Midwest. Despite the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, the number of doctors qualified to perform the procedure is declining. The Health Show’s Susan Barnett reports on women's health advocates who say medical schools should start changing their policies.

Susan Wicklund - Abortion Doctor
Hearing that report reminded us of a conversation with a doctor we ran a while back...but is still appropriate today. Susan Wicklund entered medical school as a single mother well into her twenties. Caring for a young daughter and passing medical boards is one thing; but Wicklund's career became even more difficult when she began working for clinics that provide abortions. While it is not a rare procedure, it's still a fairly taboo subject of conversation...and that’s something Wicklund wants to change. The Health Show’s Julia TayIor spoke with Susan Wicklund about the pressures, controversies and rewards of such a controversial practice. Susan Wickland’s book is called "This Common Secret - My Journey As An Abortion Doctor".
