Let’s get one thing out in the open right now...almost everyone I talk to on this show is smarter than me. And you know what, I don’t care a bit. Week after week I get to meet some truly fascinating people and share the experience with you. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll go back and revisit some of our favorites from 2009. First, we’ll hear from the doctor the who led the effort to eradicate Smallpox from the world. Then a nurse mid-wife who specializes in home delivery, and a former Washington state legislator who is leading the charge for mental health care equity.

PEOPLE OF THE YEAR: D.A. Henderson - The Death Of Smallpox
If there was ever a worldwide enemy of humanity, it was Smallpox. That sounds dramatic, but think about it. In the 20th century, one hundred years after the development of a vaccine against the disease, it still killed over 300 million people worldwide. That’s when the World Health Organization made an unprecedented decision: eradicate Smallpox from the face of the Earth. The man they put in charge of that effort was Dr. Donald Ainslie Henderson. Today, D.A. Henderson is a professor of public health and medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He’s written a book about his efforts called Smallpox - The Death Of A Disease: The Inside Story Of Eradicating A Worldwide Killer.

Randy Revelle - Mental Health Parity
For years, mental health advocates have been trying to have legislation passed for mental health parity in health insurance coverage. Last year that federal legislation passed as part of the federal stimulus package...but some are calling the law weak, at least much weaker than some state laws. One of those people is Randy Revelle, senior vice president of the Washington State Hospital Association and former county executive in King County Washington. We spoke last spring at a conference in Seattle where I found out that this has been a very personal battle for him.
