I was going to start out with some statistics and maybe some percentages...but let’s put it simply: Colon cancer is a killer. We’ve know for a while that if you are obese...you have a greater chance of developing the disease. But now there’s more news about obesity and colon cancer. On this week’s Health Show, we’ll hear about a new report. We’ll also answer some basic and not so basic question about colon cancer, how you can get screened for the disease and how you can protect yourself. And we’ll hear about an aging segment of the population that is constitutionally guaranteed health care, much to their dismay.

COLON CANCER AND OBESITY
Studies have shown that obesity is a risk factor for colon cancer...but it doesn’t stop there. A new study from the Mayo Clinic shows that once a patient is diagnosed with colon cancer, the disease is more aggressive in obese patients. Dr. Frank Sinicrope, a professor of medicine and oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota is one of the authors of the study.

Colon Cancer and You - Part 1
The death rate for people with colon cancer has declined over the past 15 years. This has nothing to do with the disease and everything to do with early detection and awareness. So let’ see...who can we talk to who knows anything about colon cancer and can teach us some stuff? I know, my practicing gastroenterologist partner in crime Dr. Nina Sax.

Commentary - Health Care For Aging Prisoners
There are very few members of American society that are constitutionally guaranteed free health care. Prison inmates qualify. And as commentator Lynn Pasquerella notes, this is an aging population with greater, more expensive health problems. Lynn Pasquerella is a scholar and advocate for women's education and empowerment who writes frequently on ethical issues in medicine, public policy, and law. She is provost at the University of Hartford and will become president of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, this July.
